Maya Ceremony

Introduction

There is a Maya and Aztec prophecy that states that their godlike spirit-king will someday return. The spirit-king was Kukulcan to the Maya and Quetzalcoatl to the Aztec people. These names speak to an elaborately plumed serpent who was viewed by both cultures as their god-prophet-king (The serpent is a culturally transcendent symbol of medicine/healing as exhibited around the world both since ancient times and presently). It has been told that this god-prophet-king plumed serpent prophesized the coming of white men to the land of the red man on the "wings of a dove" and that men would lead them with two different feet-one being that of a dove and the other that of a eagle. The prophet said that they would claim to be doves but would act like eagles stealing their woman, land, cultural pride/dignity and religion and that the subsequent hundreds of years the red man would spend enslaved and in conditions of severe adversity and privation.

But then told the god-prophet-king that there would come other white men with both feet like those of a dove and that these white men would proclaim love, peace, and brotherhood to the red man. The great god-king plumed serpent said that these were the white men that would join the red man in an age of reverence and respect for the nearly forgotten and lost old ways and together usher in a new era of peace, love and happiness for all. The prophecy states further that the red men with their white brothers would regain their former position and that the white and red men would build a better world together.
